Chapter Fifteen

Toby

I felt him before I saw him, and I wrung my hands together, trying to calm my nerves. He was back. He really came back.

I’d heard the commotion when they arrived, of course, as everyone else made a run for it when the portal appeared in the front yard of the big house. I was relieved, not only for myself, but for the rest of the family. We’d spent too much time and energy being scared and grief-stricken, we didn’t need to go down that path again. Well, the others didn’t, I was already there taking a long fucking walk, even if I was trying to veer away from it.

He’s back. He came back like he promised he would.

Thayer pushed through the door to my bedroom after knocking. I was sitting on the edge of the bed, and the moment I laid eyes on him, tears sprang up, so I tilted my head down to hide them. Although, I still had to wipe them from my cheeks.

He moved forward and gently sat beside me, and whispered, “I’m home.”

I didn’t respond except to sniffle and nod.

“Toby,” he whispered a moment before he wrapped his arms around my neck.

Warmth filled my chest, and a small sob escaped as I embraced him and held him tight.

“Fuck, I missed you so much, baby,” he whispered into my hair.

“Me too,” I breathed out.

He sagged at my admission and tightened his hold on me, and we stayed that way for several minutes. I kept my eyes shut tight and inhaled his sunshine and lightning scent, letting it put me at ease.

When he pulled back, he sent me a watery smile—he had tear tracks on his cheeks—and he wiped my tears away before resting our foreheads together.

After a minute, he said, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner about needing to go back. I didn’t mean to hurt you, Toby—”

“You never do.”

He sighed and leaned back, but scooted close enough that our sides were pressed together. “You’re right, but you’ve been hurting me, too, and you seem to be doing it on purpose.”

I shot him a side glance. “I’m not… I don’t mean to be.”

He smiled sadly. “I know, I know it’s because you’re hurting.”

“That doesn’t make it okay.”

He lifted his shoulder. “Maybe not, but I get it, and I forgive you. I hope you can forgive me, too.”

Hesitantly, I reached over and squeezed his hand. “I’m trying… and I’m sorry, I don’t want to hurt you, Thay.”

He smiled, and this time it lit up his whole face. He still had tear stains and his eyes were a little puffy, but his happiness shined through and he looked beautiful. Thayer flipped his hand over and laced our fingers together as he said, “Thanks, but it’s fine. Don’t worry about it, sugar bear.”

My answering smile was wavering, but it was there all the same.

He blew out a breath and said, “So Faela… the good news is that since I’m a member of the Pink Isle’s court, I was able to get permission to bring you with me every time I go back from now on.
